OUR STORY

Owners Josh & Navar

SMA was started by us, Midland locals Josh and Navar. Originally on our own paths as athletes, we had two things in common — we loved health and fitness, and we didn’t like the standard of the gyms around us. We saw a lack of education and support and a focus on ‘cheap, convenient and fast’. Gross.

We wanted to create a functional-focused training space for everyone. A place where people of all skill levels felt comfortable. Where people didn’t feel they needed to compete in terms of ego or judgement. We wanted the opportunity to teach people how to train safely, live their best life and reap ALL the benefits.

So, in 2016, we joined forces. Bringing together Josh’s passion for motion and functional training and Navar’s focus on fat loss and strength training, we spent six months building and creating Strength and Motion Academy. 

Things have evolved a lot over those 5 years — the space, our trainers, and our holistic approach. But the fire underneath us has always remained the same: our love for health, fitness, and education.

 

Our philosophY

From our time training at numerous gyms and coaching countless people, we learnt something important: that training is only part of the solution to leading a healthy and fit lifestyle. For most people, it was restoring a stronger relationship with themselves that got them over the line to achieving their goals. 

So, we decided to take a whole-human, holistic approach to fitness. We help you build this stronger relationship with your mind and body, so you can see long-lasting results inside and out. To do this, we look at your habits — at things like:

  • Nutrition and how you fuel yourself

  • The media and content you consume daily

  • Stress levels

  • Self-talk

  • Self-awareness (breath, tension, movement)

Our gym is a place for people who are unsure how to incorporate fitness into their busy lifestyle, without being surrounded by sleazy gym salespeople or sweaty meatheads. Our gym is a place with no egos, mirrors, or typical gym arrogance. Our goal is to teach, guide and facilitate your fitness journey with a core focus on movement, nutrition, sleep and stress.
