Favourite thing about SMA
The thing I love most about SMA is that the members and team of SMA are motivated to achieve their goals and the culture within SMA is really cool!
At 13 I was beaten up by a mob of people at a skatepark. The situation scared me and I never wanted it to happen again so I started training Muay Thai at a backyard gym called “Henry’s Gym” so I could learn how to defend myself. After the first day I was instantly hooked and after a year of training I had my first fight.
I had 18 fights and won a state title with this gym but unfortunately they shut down when I was 19, I joined another gym and had 2 fights, both fights were very close but didn’t go my way. When I was 21 I decided to take a break from the sport because I lost some passion for it and needed a break. I finished my apprenticeship and took a year off from muaythai. I started working at an MMA gym teaching Muay Thai and boxing whilst also training fighters to compete. This reignited my passion for the sport and when there was an opportunity to fight for a state title I accepted and started training again. Unfortunately this fight didn’t go my way. I didn’t want to let the decision get to me so I booked a trip to Thailand so I can train and fight with the best in Bangkok.
I spent just over 3 months in Bangkok, Thailand training twice a day 6 days a week with some of the best fighters in the world, this definitely tested my mental strength but it was worth it.
When I was there I got asked to fight in a 16 man tournament which I thought was a dream come true! But a week prior to this the King of Thailand also passed away which placed the community in silence and all fight shows were canceled, so I had to go back home.
After arriving home I joined another Muay Thai gym so I could keep up my training and continue fighting. But when I was running low on funds, I decided to stop with Muay Thai and go back to my trade. At this stage I wasn’t training at all and I just wasn’t happy with where I was or what I was doing and knew I needed a change so I invested all the money I had saved and got qualified as a personal trainer.
After this I started working at a commercial gym which also offered Muay Thai classes and had their own fight team. I was able to create a business doing what I loved which was being involved with Muay Thai everyday. I worked there for 2 years which reignited my passion for Muay Thai and the health and fitness industry. I fought 4 times over this period, one of these was for the Australian Title, unfortunately a freak accident I couldn’t have prepared for occurred and I hyperextended/snapped my elbow joint. The doctors told me this injury would take 12 months to heal but after a lot of rehabilitation I was able to recover in 10 weeks and can continue doing what I love. And that is to help people become the best versions of themselves and share my passion for Muay Thai and health and fitness.
