Matt is an awesome character of SMA, one of the earliest members. You can always count on him for some banter or a spot. What a legend!
What brought you to SMA?
” I knew Josh from another gym and one night he told me he wanted to open his own gym. Josh is an awesome guy so I said I’d join if he did!”
What have been the biggest challenges you’ve overcome?
“My biggest challenge has always been my genetically small calves. Kidding, it’s actually been a combination of dysfunctional hip flexors and glutes that have caused me ongoing injuries/issues in my hips. This has been a huge hinderance to my strength goals, however I am working with coach Joel and we are overcoming and fixing these issues with great success. It has been a long and frustrating road but will be well worth it in the end when I can finally hit those big numbers in my core lifts.”
What are the biggest changes you’ve noticed?
“The biggest change I have noticed since joining SMA is my general attitude towards the body. Previously I had struggled with anxiety around injury and it had held me back from realising my potential. Through excessive questioning and harassing of the gyms amazing coaches I have a new found confidence in my body and it’s potential.”
What do you like the most about SMA?
“My favourite thing about SMA is definitely the people and the unique culture they create. The reason I travel an additional 40 minutes a day to use this gym is because it’s become so much more than just weightlifting for me. In a world that has become so extremely competitive and pits everyone off against one another, it’s very refreshing to have a place where everyone is constantly just uplifting those around them. I literally experience this every night I’m there and have never seen or experienced negative interactions with anyone there. I can literally go on for days about all the great things about SMA but in the interest of keeping things short I will just add one more – the coaches.
All the coaches at SMA are incredibly passionate about the success of everyone in the gym, in every aspect of their lives. They possess one quality that most businesses do not, they are genuine for their cause. They all posses different unique skill sets which means iv never had a question that couldn’t be answered by this incredible team of people.”
