We all have brains, and we all know some peoples work better than others.
Have you imagined what it would be like to have a brain like a supercomputer? Full of energy and processing power to learn and achieve anything we wanted?
Our brain performance is heavily related to our lifestyle, and by implementing the five following pieces of advice, you’ll be able to make your brain AND life better in no time.
Be sure to SHARE this article with any friends who you think need more brain power. (haha)
1. Exercise
We are DESIGNED to move. It’s a fact.
When we exercise our body releases a host of reward chemicals that make us feel good and perform better.
Whenever we exercise, more of our brain ‘ lights up’ and becomes active, when compared to when we are sedentary or not moving.
There is a chemical called BDNF that is released when we exercise that is shown to grow new brain cells, which keeps our brain healthy, lowers stress and fights depression.
2. Sleep
If you are reading this, then there is a 33% – 45% chance that you are one of the Australian adults that suffer from a form of sleep deprivation.
That is a massive amount! Considering sleep is known to be one of the most important factors in our health.
When we lose sleep our mental performance across EVERY category gets worse, and why wouldn’t it, we all know we don’t feel sharp when we’re tired.
Many people make the mistake of trying to exercise, buy expensive supplements and eat well when they don’t even get an average of 8 hours of sleep each night.
A few tips to improve sleep:
- Use a blue light blocker on your phone AT LEAST an hour before bed, blue light, which is contained in most modern lights blocks our brains abilities to produce the chemicals that make us sleepy
- Set a ‘wind-down’ bedtime alarm an hour before bed, and actually enforce it for your own wellbeing!
- Practice stress relieving techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, reading a book or listening to calming music 30 minutes before you plan on sleeping
- Try to consistently go to bed at the same time to train your body into a sleep schedule
3. Try new things
Our brain is designed to conserve energy as a survival mechanism, so once it gets used to doing things one way, it doesn’t like to change its mind.
This means, if we constantly try new things and force ourselves into new, sometimes uncomfortable experiences, our brain has to adapt by building new circuits.
This means we have the potential to continually re-wire our brain to be better and break and create habits as long as we force ourselves to create this change for a period of time.
4. Laugh More
Do you think life is meant to be super serious?
I don’t. It’s important to respect others, and try to do well in life, but not at the expense of your happiness and sense of humour.
Laughing has a whole host of benefits, including reducing stress hormones. Stress hormones have been shown to reduce the power of our brain and make us more reactive and negative.
Not only does it reduce stress hormones, healthy hormones and endorphins are also released when we laugh.
Here’s a terrible joke for you to laugh at:
‘Sit-ups are the best exercise because they include the most lying down’
5. Eat Well
We’ve all heard the saying, you are what you eat. This saying is 100% true. Every cell in your body is made from the food that you eat.
So if you eat rubbish foods, your body is well… a pile of rubbish.
Do you think your brain runs well when it’s running off processed garbage and chemicals that our body hasn’t evolved to digest?
The short answer is no.
The reason our society has record highs of cognitive disorders such as ADHD, autism, anxiety, depressions, and Alzheimers is heavily related to the diets that we are all eating.
Nutrition can get complicated, but a general rule is to eat local fruit, vegetables, and proteins, and minimize processed foods (anything from a packet!) as much as possible.
Wrapping things up
How you feel, and the results you achieve in your life are your responsibility.
So take charge of your life, and implement some of these tips as soon as possible.
With a well functioning mind, you’ll be able to do things more quickly, learn more, be happier and have more energy.
